Site now has Avatars

Postby Cube » Fri Oct 12, 2012 5:58 pm

You can now add an Avatar to your profile on the site.

Just login and add your photo and it will display next to all your songs.

I noticed there is no gif support. I love this feature though.

I feel like no animated gif support is a feature in itself :)

Actually that's cause the they are automatically scaled to thumbnails and linux convert just takes the first frame on gifs I believe.

This is a pretty sweet feature! It may not have animated gif support, but the majority of the time people are going to see the fairly small avatar next to song scores anyway.

Although I have to wonder why the the avatars for the main site have no size restraints, and can be up to 1mb when the forums avatars can only be 200x200, and 48.83 KiB.

That's just what I set it to. I can increase the file size for the forum, but I'd prefer the dimensions to be within 200x200. As for the main site the dimensions will get shrunk regardless so there is no restriction.

Having the dimensions be within 200x200 in the forum is perfectly fine, what I really was getting at is whether or not the forums can re-size image uploads as well. If the forum is incapable of image resizing then it's not a big deal, but since the main site has no problem resizing image uploads I wasn't sure if the forum could as well.

The forums are phpbb which does not have avatar resizing. Could install a plugin to do it though...

Avatar's for the game-site are automatically resized to 150x150 for user page and 20x20 for the small images regardless of size that you upload. The reason I made a 1MB limit is so users do not have to necessarily resize the image themself and can upload a relatively large image and the server will automatically scale it down.

Alright, thanks for explaining!

If the plugin isn't difficult to install into the forum, I think it would be a decent idea to implement the feature. It would make uploading an avatar a lot less cumbersome on the user side, considering they wouldn't have to open an image editor, and then re-size and re-save just to have an image meet requirements. Not to say that doing this is particularly difficult, but it would definitely help streamline the forum / profile setup process for new users.

The thread you linked wrote:## Installation Level: Easy

Looks simple enough lol.

I went ahead and added this. Please let me know if you see any issues with it. I am testing it out right now.

The resizing feature seems to work perfectly after doing a couple image tests from my end. Awesome feature, really glad you added it!

At this point the only thing that needs to be done is to remove the 200x200 maximum dimensions requirement (from the description), and to raise the max image size from 48.83 KiB to something much higher. I'd say something along the lines of 256kb, that should be suitable for most images I could imagine a user uploading as an avatar. Since the final image is now able to re-sized, the file size of the avatar will be severely reduced as well, meaning the size restriction should be a lot more lenient.
