(FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions (Updated: 2/5/2016)

Postby SpoOkyGames » Sat Dec 20, 2014 2:59 pm

I am unsure if Izzy ever got around to this or not. If he did, this can be merged/updated. I don't have any pattern/order in mind or anything. I am just going off memory/stuff I know about. Some of these may not even be frequently asked. (More informal question/answers that I know about.)

Very Common Asked Questions
Spoiler: show
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I download a/one specific song?
A: On this website, you cannot. You are required to download the whole pack here. If you want single downloads, you will have to go somewhere else. However, you can do a "Song Search" if you want a specific song and download that pack that it's included in.

Q: How do I install songs in StepMania?
A: This depends on what version of StepMania you are using/how you prefer using it. I will add both answers below.

Edit: Here is a video I made with a more in-depth look at Userdata/Installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks05Auw0OYQ

SM 3.95: Locate the programs Installation Directory. There should be a directory inside it called, "Songs". This is the directory you need to put your song packs in.

SM 5: SM5 now uses your userdata directory for songs. Depending on what Operating System you use, it will be different locations. Here are the following OS userdata directories.

Windows: %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/ (Example: C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\StepMania 5)
Linux: ~/.stepmania-5/ (Example: <User>/.stepmania-5)
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/StepMania 5/ and/or ~/Library/Preferences/StepMania 5/ (I am not a Mac user so, I can't explain this. Probably similar to Linux though.)

SM5 Note: If you like the programs directory location, you can create a file called, "Portable.ini" in the Installation Directory.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: I messed up my key configuration! What do I do?
A: Depending on which version of StepMania you have, the solution may be easy or a bit more complicated. However, the primary solution should work for you.
Find your keymaps.ini file (This will either be in the installation directory or appdata. Depends on your version of StepMania.) Make sure you close StepMania and delete the keymaps.ini file. Restart StepMania and your keys should be reset.

SM5 Note: There is an easier way if you have a version with the debug menu item. Hold F3, press F5 once, and press the 'P' key. This will reset your keys.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why was my online score different compared to my in-game score?
A: This server automatically converts/saves your scores to J4. (regardless of which one you use in-game.) This is to prevent cheating and whatnot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Can you explain some terminology in StepMania?
A: There are a few different sites explaining this already. See one of these:

http://strategywiki.org/wiki/StepMania/Terminology
http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz ... p?t=127628
http://www.keybeat.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2435

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What happened to Chatango?
A: They decided to switch to IRC. The server is: 'irc://irc.rizon.net/' and the channel name is: '#smo'. If you wish to register a username, enter this command in the chat and it will explain how to register your username:

'/msg NickServ HELP'

Uncommon Asked Questions
Spoiler: show
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What is the songs directory format? Why are my songs not loading?
A: There are a few possible answers here but, this is the most obvious. The song folder has a specific format to it. You need to follow this format.

    Songs
      <Song Pack Name 1>
        <Song Directory 1>
          <File 1>
          <File 2>
          <File 3>
        <Song Directory 2>
          <File 1>
          <File 2>
          <File 3>
        <Song Directory 3>
          <File 1>
          <File 2>
          <File 3>
      <Song Pack Name 2>
        See Above.
      <Song Pack Name 3>
        See Above.

Example: Songs/My_Cool_Song_Pack/Song_1/Files, Songs/My_Cool_Song_Pack/Song_2/Files, Songs/My_Cool_Song_Pack/Song_3/Files

The filenames are whatever you want them to be in general. Just leave the "Songs" directory name alone.

Note: If you want to temporarily remove songs from the game, make a temp folder and put the song packs in that folder. Name it something like... "X_Songs" or something. Make sure you don't name it something that already is used in userdata/programs directory.

Q: Where can I get themes, noteskins, etc. for SM?
A: There are a number of places. Although, I will give you a general list of some that I know of.

Themes: http://sm.ajworld.net/themes/

Rare Asked Questions
Spoiler: show
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What is a "Nightly Build"?
A: A nightly build is SM5+ automatically built every so often so users can test the latest changes. You can get a copy here: http://smnightly.katzepower.com/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I compile/build StepMania 5 myself?
A: Great question! For Linux, you will see these two links.

http://www.stepmania.com/wiki/linux-dependencies/
http://beta.stepmania.com/wiki/compiling-stepmania/

As for Windows, you will need Visual Studio and I believe a copy of the SDK. I don't remember the link at the moment. If I find it, I will add it.

edit: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=6812 and/or http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=3138

As for Mac, it seems you use... XCode. I am not a Mac user so, I can't help you here sorry.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I create themes in StepMania?
A: I never made themes in 3.95. However, if you want to make themes in 5, I have all kinds of useful information for you! First off, you will need these links:

http://kki.ajworld.net/lua/sm5/Lua.xml (Server Shut Down)
http://dguzek.github.io/Lua-For-SM5/API/Lua.xml
http://ssc.ajworld.net/midiman%27s_big_ ... sefuls.txt

You may also want to check the "Docs/Themerdocs" directory in SM5. This has the most up to date changes AFAIK. There are many useful documents in here. If you are new to Lua, you might want to read this page over as well.

http://lua-users.org/wiki/TutorialDirectory

Edit: I am also working on a guide here: http://stepmaniaonline.net/forum/viewto ... f=8&t=4893

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Where do I report bugs for StepMania?
A: If your bug report is for SM5, then you should go here: https://github.com/stepmania/stepmania/issues

Note: Any other versions are too old and should not be reported. Make sure you ONLY report bugs that relate to the fallback/default theme only. (Unless you have good reason to report a custom theme bug.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: My song(s) are off sync! How do I fix this/them?
A: This can be a trivial task. I have done this for a while now. The way I do it is... incorrect... However, I do it this way for a reason... I am not going to explain how to do it my way because you should never do it my way unless you crazy. :P Anyway, here is what you need to do...

Edit: Here is a video on it I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJMAlQWS1mM

1: Before you do ANYTHING, go to options, and play the Calibrate Audio Sync screen. This let's you set the Global/Machine offset. This is the most simplest way to start. Play the simfile by music. Try to ignore/disregard the notes all together if you can. (Just remember the pattern.) When playing the file, keep in mind the game adjusts it based on average. It's not 100% accurate but, it's pretty damn close. It ignores anything below greats though. Try to get Perfects/Marvelous as much as possible. Make sure you play the file MORE THAN ONCE! You need to get a good consistent sync before continuing. Once you are positive it's synchronized, go back by pressing escape. The game now asks you if you wish to save. If it's correct, save. If not, don't save and try again.

2: Now, play a few songs and see if this helped. If so, great! You should be done. If not, continue to 3.

3: If you find songs that ARE sync and some that are NOT sync. This is a issue with that specific songs. If ALL SONGS ARE NOT synced, you either screwed up step 1 or all your songs are really screwed up sync wise. You may want to repeat step 1 here but once you find the correct setting, DO NOT change machine/Global offset ever again. (unless you get a newer version of SM is off that songs were already synced.)

Anyway, to synchronize a specific song that is off, I recommend you do the following:

- Pick the song that is off sync.
- Go to player options and turn on "little" from "Remove". *
- I recommend playing the hardest stepfile. (gives the most 4th notes.)
- Once the game starts, quickly press F6 ONCE. Text should come up saying, "Sync Song". If not, go back and try again. You can also go to Song Options and turn it on as well.
- Same as before, hit the notes based off music. Ignore/Disregard notes themselves if you can.
- Once the song is done, save/don't save if you feel if it's right or wrong.
- Turn "Little" off and play the song normally. Repeat if song is not sync. Done.

* Note: This assumes the song(s) has kick drums with 4th timing. If this song is breakbeat or different timing, you may not want to use "Little". Instead, find a good constant pattern you feel comfortable hitting without minimal mistakes and try that. Not recommended unless you have good knowledge of music.

Other Note: What happens if you screw up the machine/songs sync? You can manually change the song/machine sync hitting F6 once or twice and use F11 and F12. (Along with... ctrl, shift, and/or alt keys. I can't remember exact keys atm sorry.)

Assist Note: It is NOT recommended to use the clap/metronome sounds to sync files. You are better off doing it via music.

SM4 Note: Don't sync stuff using StepMania 4... the editor/syncing is broken as hell... (I found this out the hard way...)

Variable Bit Rate Note: If your audio file has a variable bit rate, sync will also be screwed up. You may want to consider re-rendering the file in audacity as an .ogg file. (Worked for me.)

First question: See "How do I play online? I am new here; How do I get started?"

Second Question: This really depends on the theme creator. They can enable/disable online screens as you like. As for which one's actually work online; someone will have to point them out to me. I only use default and my theme.

Edit: Added terminology question and added note about theming guide.

There's no "Roaming" folder under Appdata on my computer. Can I create one? How would the game know it's there? Sorry if this is the dumb. I've modded other games, but I just can't figure this one out.

Uh, I honestly have no idea. It should be there... Have you tried making a StepMania profile? That should hopefully create some data in there...
